Identification
This land snail is defined by its "globose" (nearly spherical) shell, which typically measures 20–30mm in diameter. Unlike the heavy, opaque shells of many garden snails, the shell of *A. redfieldi* is remarkably thin—almost gossamer—and translucent. It glows with a warm, amber-yellow or pale brownish hue. Look for a smooth, lustrous surface with very fine growth lines but no prominent ribs. A key field mark is the "imperforate" center; unlike many relatives, its umbilicus (the hole on the underside) is either completely closed or reduced to a tiny chink.
Habitat & Range
Primarily native to South and East China and Taiwan, this species thrives in subtropical humidity. You’ll find it in secondary forests, lush gardens, and agricultural edges. It is particularly fond of "edge habitats" where moisture is trapped by low-lying ferns and broad-leafed vegetation.
Behaviour
*Acusta redfieldi* is a nocturnal "rain-dancer." While it spends dry days tucked away in cool crevices or under damp logs to prevent desiccation, it emerges with surprising speed during humid nights. It is notably more arboreal than many other land snails, often seen gliding up the stalks of ginger or bamboo. Like most pulmonates, it is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, but it still seeks out partners for elaborate courtship rituals involving tactile "mating dances."
Diet
Equipped with a radula (a ribbon of microscopic teeth), it functions as a vital recycler. It grazes on soft plant tissues, fallen fruit, and algae. In garden settings, it is a discerning herbivore, preferring tender young shoots and decaying organic matter.

During courtship, *Acusta redfieldi* utilizes a "love dart"—a sharp, calcareous harpoon that it stabs into its partner’s body. This isn’t for sperm transfer, but rather to inject a specialized mucus that increases the chances of its sperm surviving to fertilize the partner's eggs!
