### Identification The Addax, often called the "White Antelope," is a master of desert camouflage. Standing about a meter at the shoulder, its most striking feature is the pair of long, thin horns that spiral upward in a graceful corkscrew—reaching up to 85cm in length. Look for the distinctive white "X" marking across the bridge of its nose, which contrasts sharply against a dark, tufted forehead. While its coat is a brilliant, heat-reflecting white in the summer, it undergoes a remarkable transformation in winter, darkening to a smoky grayish-brown. To distinguish it from the similar Scimitar-horned Oryx, look at the feet: the Addax possesses exceptionally broad, splayed hooves with flat soles that act like natural snowshoes, preventing it from sinking into soft Saharan dunes.
### Habitat & Range This is a specialist of the "Empty Quarter." Historically found across North Africa, the Addax is now critically endangered, with a tiny remnant population clinging to life in the Termit Massif of Niger. They inhabit the harshest hyper-arid regions imaginable, including shifting sand seas (ergs) and stony desert pavements where vegetation is sparse and water is nonexistent.
### Behaviour Addax are the ultimate nomads, wandering vast distances to track erratic rainfall. They are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, spending the blistering midday hours tucked into "beds" they scrape out in the shade of dunes or scrub to minimize moisture loss. They live in small, egalitarian herds of 5 to 20 individuals, usually led by the eldest female. In the field, an observer would notice their slow, deliberate gait—an energy-saving adaptation for a life of scarcity.
### Diet As generalist grazers, they survive on tough desert grasses (like *Aristida*) and succulent scrub. They are incredibly efficient foragers, utilizing their blunt muzzles to clip sparse greenery close to the parched earth.
### Fascinating Fact The Addax is a biological miracle that can go its entire life without ever taking a drink of water. It extracts every necessary drop of moisture from the plants it eats and has evolved specialized kidneys that produce the most concentrated urine of any antelope to ensure not a milliliter is wasted.
