Meet the Six-spotted Microcaddisfly (*Agraylea sexmaculata*), a tiny titan of the reeds that proves the most intricate beauties often come in the smallest packages.
Identification
At a mere 3–5 mm in length, this diminutive insect requires a keen eye or a good hand lens. When at rest, it holds its wings in a "tent-like" silhouette common to caddisflies. The defining field mark is its ornamentation: the dark, charcoal-hued forewings are decorated with exactly six pale, creamy-yellow spots arranged symmetrically—three per wing. While its cousin, *A. multipunctata*, looks as though it has been dusted haphazardly with flour, *sexmaculata* is deliberate and neat. Its wings are notably hairy and lanceolate (pointed), giving it a fuzzy, moth-like appearance.
Habitat & Range
This species is a Holarctic resident, widely distributed across Europe and North America. It thrives in the "slow lane"—preferring the margins of lowland lakes, stagnant ponds, and sluggish canals. You will almost always find them in areas choked with filamentous algae, which serves as both their larder and their nursery.
Behaviour
Adults are most active during the "magic hour" of dusk, when they can be seen skittering nervously over lily pads or shoreline stones. The larvae are the true architects; they construct flattened, purse-shaped cases made of silk and tiny algal strands. These "purses" are portable homes that the larvae carry as they navigate the underwater jungle of aquatic macrophyte stems.
Diet
The larvae are specialized "piercer-herbivores." Rather than chewing leaves, they use sharp, asymmetrical mandibles to puncture individual cells of filamentous algae (like *Spirogyra*). They then vacuum out the nutrient-rich liquid cytoplasm, leaving behind a trail of empty, transparent cell husks.
Fascinating Fact
The *Agraylea* larva is a master of the "lifestyle pivot." For its first four larval stages, it is a lean, fast-moving, free-living crawler without a home. Only upon reaching its final stage does it suddenly transform its body shape and weave its iconic silk purse in a single, frantic burst of construction!
