Identification
The Guttural Toad (*Sclerophrys gutturalis*) is a robust, warty character reaching up to 120mm in length. When observing one, look first for the distinct, dark-edged "V" or cross-shape between the eyes and the symmetrical, chocolate-brown blotches decorating its olive-tan back. The definitive field mark, however, is hidden: if you gently observe the hind legs, you’ll find vibrant brick-red patches on the inner thighs. This "red flash" is the clincher that distinguishes them from the nearly identical Raucous Toad. Their parotoid glands—the poison-filled bumps behind the eyes—are prominent, smooth, and run parallel to the spine.
Habitat & Range
These toads are the ultimate African generalists, ranging from Ethiopia down through the eastern half of the continent to South Africa. While they naturally frequent savannas and grasslands, they have become the "kings of the suburbs." You’ll find them in almost any garden with a bit of moisture, from coastal forests to high-veld scrub, though they generally avoid extreme desert or high-mountain peaks.
Behaviour
After the first heavy summer rains, the night air fills with their signature call—a deep, rhythmic, guttural "snore" that lasts about one second. Males are territorial and surprisingly bold, often seen sitting stoically on garden paths. They are primarily nocturnal, spending their days tucked away in damp leaf litter or under cool flowerpots, emerging at dusk to begin their nightly patrol.
Diet
Opportunistic and gluttonous, they employ a "sit-and-wait" strategy. Their diet consists primarily of beetles, termites, and spiders, but a large adult is a formidable predator that won’t hesitate to swallow smaller frogs or even tiny lizards.
Fascinating Fact
Guttural Toads exhibit remarkable "site fidelity" and intelligence. They have been known to "farm" human households, returning to the exact same porch light every evening at dusk. They have learned that artificial light acts as a buffet-style lure for insects, essentially using our technology to do the hunting for them!
