### **The Red Lead Roundhead (*Leratiomyces ceres*)**
Identification
Commonly known as the "Chip Cherry," this mushroom is a showstopper. The cap (2–7 cm) is a startling, "stop-light" orange-red to deep crimson, often fading slightly at the margins. When young, the cap is convex, but it flattens with age, frequently retaining delicate, white cottony scales (veil remnants) along the edge. The gills are a crucial field mark: they begin pale yellowish-grey but soon darken to a deep, smoky purple-brown as the spores mature. The stem is off-white to pale orange, often showing a faint, dark "ring zone" where the veil once attached. To distinguish it from the similar *Leratiomyces squamosus*, look for the *ceres’* lack of prominent scales on the stem and its preference for bright, cherry-red tones over duller ochre.
Habitat & Range
This species is a true "urban adventurer." While originally native to Australia and New Zealand, it has become a cosmopolitan traveler, hitchhiking across North America and Europe via the nursery trade. You won't find it in deep, ancient forests; instead, look for it in landscaped gardens, parks, and urban path-sides. It is almost exclusively found growing on woodchips and heavy mulch.
Behaviour
The Red Lead Roundhead is gregarious. If you spot one, you’ll likely find a "troop" of dozens marching across the mulch. They are most active during the cool, damp windows of autumn and early winter. An observer will notice they appear suddenly after heavy rain, their vibrant caps popping against the drab browns of decaying wood.
Diet
As a saprobic species, *L. ceres* is a master recycler. It doesn't hunt or partner with trees; instead, it secretes enzymes to break down lignin and cellulose in woody debris, turning hard woodchips into rich soil nutrients.
Fascinating Fact
This mushroom is a "human-follower." Its global spread is a direct result of the modern landscaping industry. By mass-producing woodchips and transporting them across continents, humans have unintentionally built a global "highway" for this species to colonize the world!
