### **Mexican Bullsnake (*Pituophis deppei*)**
Identification
This is a robust, powerful serpent, reaching lengths of 4 to 6 feet. Its base color is a warm straw-yellow or tan, strikingly patterned with 35–55 dark brown to black rectangular "saddles" along the back. Unlike the more common Gopher Snake (*P. catenifer*), *deppei* typically lacks the smaller lateral spots, giving it a cleaner, more banded appearance. Look closely at the scales; they are heavily keeled (ridged), giving the snake a matte, non-reflective texture. The head is relatively small for such a thick body, often featuring a dark line between the eyes.
Habitat & Range
An endemic treasure of Mexico, this species haunts the high-altitude heart of the country. You’ll find them across the Mexican Plateau, from Chihuahua down to Puebla, usually at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters. They thrive in the transition zones of pine-oak woodlands, semi-arid scrublands, and even high-elevation agricultural fields where rodent prey is plentiful.
Behaviour
The Mexican Bullsnake is a master of theatrics. When cornered, it performs a legendary defensive display: inflating its body, vibrating its tail in dry leaf litter to mimic a rattlesnake, and emitting a hiss so loud it sounds like a leaking steam pipe. Despite this "tough guy" routine, they are primarily shy, diurnal hunters. On cool mornings, you might spot one basking on a stone wall to absorb the mountain sun before retreating into a rodent burrow.
Diet
As an active, wide-ranging forager, *P. deppei* is a generalist predator. It uses its keen sense of smell to track down pocket gophers, voles, and ground squirrels, which it dispatches via powerful constriction. They are also adept climbers and will frequently raid bird nests for eggs and fledglings.
