### **The Sailfin Molly (*Poecilia latipinna*)**
Identification
The Sailfin Molly is a stunning example of sexual dimorphism in the shallows. Males are the undisputed stars, reaching up to 4 inches and sporting a magnificent, sail-like dorsal fin that can be taller than their body depth. Look for an oblong, compressed body shimmering with iridescent scales and 5–8 horizontal rows of dark, rectangular spots. While females are larger and more subdued in olive-grey, both sexes possess a distinctively upturned, "pouty" mouth designed for surface feeding. To distinguish it from its cousin, the Mexican Sailfin (*P. velifera*), count the dorsal fin rays; *P. latipinna* typically possesses 12–14, whereas the Mexican variety has nearly 19.
Habitat & Range
These resilient fish are masters of the "liminal" waters of the American Southeast, ranging from North Carolina down through the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatán Peninsula. They are famously euryhaline, meaning they comfortably navigate a spectrum from freshwater spring runs and roadside ditches to brackish Spartina marshes and high-salinity coastal lagoons. Look for them in shallow, sun-warmed waters thick with submerged vegetation or filamentous algae.
Behaviour
In the field, you’ll observe a high-energy social structure. Males are tireless "strutters," frequently flaring their massive dorsal fins in a shimmering display to intimidate rivals or court unimpressed females. They are diurnal and highly social, often seen in loose shoals. Because they lack a true stomach, they are constant foragers, spent mostly nipping at submerged surfaces.
Diet
Primarily herbivorous, the Sailfin Molly is a specialized "grazer." They spend their days scraping "aufwuchs"—a cocktail of algae, diatoms, and detritus—off rocks and plants. However, they are opportunistic; if a mosquito larva or small crustacean drifts by, they won’t hesitate to snap it up, making them vital for natural pest control in marshy areas.
