### Psammophis subtaeniatus (Western Yellow-bellied Sand Snake)
Identification
The Western Yellow-bellied Sand Snake is a masterclass in aerodynamic design. Reaching lengths of 100–140 cm, its body is exceptionally slender and whip-like, ending in a long, tapering tail. The dorsal color is a sophisticated olive-brown or greyish-olive, often featuring a pale-edged dark band running down the spine. However, the definitive field mark is on its underside: a brilliant golden-yellow belly bisected by two crisp, black longitudinal lines. These "railroad tracks" distinguish it instantly from the larger, bulkier Olive Grass Snake (*P. mossambicus*), which lacks these clean ventral stripes.
Habitat & Range
This species is a heat-lover, primarily found in the low-lying, arid savannas and mopane woodlands of Southern and East Africa. It is a common sight in the Limpopo Valley, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. You’ll find it navigating acacia scrub, rocky outcrops, and even abandoned termite mounds, generally at elevations below 1,500 meters.
Behaviour
If you catch a glimpse of this snake, it will likely be as a golden blur. These are the "Formula One" racers of the reptile world—diurnal, incredibly alert, and lightning-fast. In the field, you may spot one "periscoping," lifting the front third of its body off the ground to peer over the grass. While they are terrestrial, they are agile climbers and will readily take to low bushes to bask or escape a predator.
Diet
As active foragers, they don't wait for food to come to them. They use their keen eyesight to track movement, frequently hunting skinks, lacertids, and small rodents. Once they catch their prey in a high-speed chase, they use a mild venom delivered via rear fangs to subdue it before swallowing.

The Western Yellow-bellied Sand Snake practices a bizarre grooming ritual known as "self-polishing." It uses its snout to rub a waxy, lipid-rich secretion from its nostrils over its belly scales. This "polish" acts as a waterproof sealant, helping the snake retain moisture in its parched, sun-drenched environment.
