Identification
The Spotted Barking Gecko is a pint-sized marvel, rarely exceeding 50mm in snout-vent length. It sports a robust, "toad-like" head with large, lidless eyes and vertical pupils that give it a perpetually surprised expression. Look for a pale, sandy-yellow base color adorned with irregular, dark-brown or reddish-orange blotches—a masterclass in cryptic camouflage. While it resembles the Common Barking Gecko (*P. garrulus*), *P. maculatus* is distinguished by its bolder, more defined spotting and the fine, comb-like fringes (pectinate scales) on its toes, which act like specialized snowshoes for navigating shifting sands.
Habitat & Range
This specialist is a resident of the arid southwest, primarily found in the Kalahari sands of Namibia and the Northern Cape of South Africa. It shuns rocky terrain, tethering its existence to open sandy plains and dry riverbeds. You won't find them in lush vegetation; they require stable, fine-grained sand where the substrate is firm enough to support a permanent burrow.
Behaviour
As the sun dips below the horizon, the desert transforms into an acoustic arena. Males emerge halfway from their burrows to emit a rhythmic, percussive "click-click-click" to defend territory and woo mates. They are strictly nocturnal and fiercely solitary. If you spot one in your headlamp beam, watch for its lightning-fast retreat; they use their spiraled burrows not just for safety, but as thermal heat sinks to survive the blistering daytime temperatures.
Diet
These geckos are opportunistic sit-and-wait predators. They linger near their burrow entrances, snatching up passing invertebrates. Their diet is heavily focused on harvester termites and small ants, though they will lung at the occasional beetle or moth during a summer emergence.
Fascinating Fact
The Spotted Barking Gecko is a tiny acoustic engineer! It meticulously shapes the entrance of its burrow into a flared megaphone shape, which physically amplifies its call, allowing its tiny voice to carry for hundreds of meters across the silent desert floor.
