### Identification The African Bullfrog (*Pyxicephalus adspersus*) is a true behemoth of the amphibian world. Males are significantly larger than females—a rarity in frogs—reaching lengths of 24cm and weighing over a kilogram. Look for a squat, powerful body with olive-drab skin textured by distinct longitudinal skin folds. A key field mark for distinguishing males is the bright yellow to orange coloration in the "armpits" (axillary region). Unlike most frogs, they possess three bony, tooth-like projections called odontoid processes on the lower jaw, used to pin down struggling prey.
### Habitat & Range This species is a specialist of the semi-arid savannahs and highveld grasslands of Southern and East Africa, ranging from South Africa northward to Kenya. They are most commonly found in open areas with sandy soils and seasonal, shallow pans. Because they spend the vast majority of the year dormant underground, they are rarely seen outside of the heavy summer rains.
### Behaviour Observed in the field, these frogs are remarkably pugnacious. They are "explosive breeders"; when the rains arrive, hundreds of males congregate in shallow pools, engaging in violent wrestling matches to establish dominance. Most impressively, the dominant males are dedicated fathers. They guard the nursery pools against predators and will even use their powerful hind legs to dig "escape channels" up to 15 meters long to move their tadpoles from drying puddles to deeper water.
### Diet An unapologetic generalist, the African Bullfrog utilizes a "sit-and-wait" ambush strategy. They will lung at anything they can overpower, including large insects, scorpions, small birds, rodents, and even other frogs. Their powerful bite and "teeth" make them one of the few frogs capable of drawing blood from a human.
