The African Red Toad (*Schismaderma carens*) is an outlier in the world of bufonids. While most toads are defined by their warty, rugged skin, this robust species boasts a surprisingly smooth, leathery appearance that makes it a favorite find for night-time explorers.
Identification
This is a large, imposing toad, reaching up to 90mm. Its most striking feature is its uniform brick-red to sandy-brown dorsum, which lacks the blotchy patterns of its cousins. To distinguish it in the field, look for two key marks: first, unlike almost all other toads, it **lacks swollen parotoid glands** behind the eyes. Second, look for two dark, symmetrical spots on the lower back (the sacrum). A distinct dark line also runs from the eye, over the ear (tympanum), down to the shoulder, framing its face with a mask-like elegance.
Habitat & Range
You’ll find this specialist across the mesic savannas and open woodlands of Southern and Eastern Africa, ranging from South Africa up to Tanzania. It is particularly fond of bushveld and suburban gardens, provided there is access to deep, permanent water bodies like farm dams or large ponds for breeding.
Behaviour
Primarily nocturnal, these toads spend their days tucked away in leaf litter or abandoned burrows. During the rainy season, the night comes alive with their deep, resonant "whoop" calls, which sound more like a distant pigeon than an amphibian. They are explosive breeders; when the rains hit, hundreds may descend on a single pool, creating a chaotic, churning mass of red bodies.
Diet
A classic generalist predator, the Red Toad patrols the forest floor for anything it can swallow. Its diet consists mainly of beetles, ants, and termites, which it captures with a lightning-fast flick of its sticky tongue.
Fascinating Fact
While adult toads are solitary, their offspring are remarkably social. *Schismaderma carens* tadpoles are the only African species known to form **massive, coordinated schools**. These dense, black "clouds" of thousands of tadpoles swim in unison, mimicking a single large organism to confuse and deter predators like fish and dragonfly nymphs.
