### **The African Collared Dove (*Streptopelia roseogrisea*)**
Often referred to as the "Ghost of the Sahel," this elegant, pale dove is a master of blending into the sun-bleached landscapes of arid Africa.
Identification
A medium-sized dove (approx. 26–28 cm), the African Collared Dove is notably paler than its cousins. Its plumage is a delicate, sandy-buff that appears almost creamy-white in harsh sunlight. The defining field mark is the **narrow black crescent** on the back of the neck, finely edged with white. Look for its dark primary feathers which create a sharp contrast against its pale body in flight. To distinguish it from the nearly identical Eurasian Collared Dove, look at the **undertail coverts**: in this species, they are stark white, whereas the Eurasian's are grey. Its eyes are a deep, soulful ruby-red, set against a dark bill.
Habitat & Range
This is a bird of the drylands. It occupies a thin, horizontal band across the African continent known as the **Sahel**, stretching from Mauritania to Ethiopia and into the Arabian Peninsula. You will find them in arid acacia savannas, thorny scrublands, and near desert oases. They are rarely found far from a reliable water source, as they must drink daily to process their dry diet.
Behaviour
Observers will typically find them in pairs or small, social flocks. They are most active at dawn and dusk, frequently seen perched atop acacia thorns or telephone wires. Their flight is fast and direct, characterized by rhythmic wingbeats. Listen for their distinctive, three-syllable coo: a rolling **"koo-kooo-ku,"** with the emphasis on the middle note—a soothing soundtrack to the African bush.
Diet
Primarily granivorous, they spend much of their day on the ground, nodding their heads rhythmically as they forage for grass seeds, fallen grains, and the occasional small succulent sprout. They are opportunistic and will readily visit cattle troughs or village outskirts to glean spilled millet.
