### Identification Small but mighty, the Russian Tortoise (or Horsfield’s) is easily recognized by its unusually round, flattened carapace—looking more like a sun-bleached, golden-brown disc than the high-domed shell of its cousins. While their color ranges from olive-drab to burnt-umber with dark, irregular blotches, the definitive field mark is on their feet: they possess only four toes on each limb, a unique trait among the *Testudo* genus. Look for a stout, "armored" appearance and a plastron (underside) heavily marked with solid black patches.
### Habitat & Range These are the rugged survivors of the Central Asian steppes. Their range is vast, stretching from southeastern Russia and the Caspian Sea through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and into western China. They thrive in harsh, wind-swept landscapes—from arid clay deserts to rocky, high-elevation hillsides up to 2,500 meters. They prefer areas with sparse vegetation where the soil is firm enough for structural integrity but soft enough to yield to their powerful claws.
### Behaviour In the field, you’ll notice they are master excavators. To survive a climate of extremes, they dig burrows up to two meters deep. Because their home range is so punishing, they may only be active for three months a year, spending the rest in hibernation (winter) or estivation (summer) to avoid the searing heat. During the brief spring window, males are surprisingly vigorous, engaging in rhythmic head-bobbing and shell-ramming to assert dominance and woo mates.
### Diet They are strictly herbivorous "mowers," focusing on ephemeral wildflowers, succulent weeds, and fibrous grasses. They are opportunistic foragers, gorging on nutrient-dense new growth immediately following the spring rains to fuel their long periods of dormancy.
### Fascinating Fact In 1968, two Russian Tortoises became the first Earthlings to orbit the moon! They traveled aboard the Soviet Zond 5 spacecraft, surviving the vacuum of space and a high-G reentry, proving these ancient wanderers are built for the ultimate endurance test.
