### Identification The spiders of the genus *Zelotes* are the "shadow-stalkers" of the undergrowth. Most species are small to medium-sized (3–10mm) and possess a striking, uniform appearance: a sleek, velvety jet-black or deep mahogany coloration. Their cephalothorax is noticeably flattened, allowing them to squeeze into impossibly tight crevices. Look closely at the rear: the most definitive field mark is their prominent, barrel-shaped spinnerets that extend past the abdomen like tiny exhaust pipes. Unlike many spiders, *Zelotes* lacks bright patterns, relying on its "stealth suit" for camouflage. To distinguish them from the similar *Gnaphosa* genus, look for the metatarsal comb—a tiny brush of stiff hairs on the underside of the hind legs used for grooming.
### Habitat & Range *Zelotes* is a global traveler, found across every continent except Antarctica. They are masters of the xeric (dry) landscape, favoring sun-baked stony heaths, dry grasslands, and deciduous leaf litter. You’ll often find them at elevations ranging from coastal dunes to subalpine scree slopes. They are true "ground spiders," rarely venturing into tall vegetation, preferring the humid microclimate beneath flat rocks or fallen logs.
### Behaviour These are strictly nocturnal hunters. By day, they hide in silken, tubular retreats spun in the soil or under stones. If you flip their cover, you’ll witness their primary defense: explosive speed. They don't bounce or jump; they scuttle with a fluid, liquid-like gait. They are solitary and can be quite aggressive toward other spiders. During mating, the male performs a delicate "drumming" ritual on the female’s retreat to avoid being mistaken for a meal.
### Diet *Zelotes* are active, wandering predators that do not use webs to snare prey. They hunt by scent and vibration, lunging at small insects, springtails, and even other spiders. They are particularly adept at tackling ants, which many other spiders avoid due to their chemical defenses and stingers.
### Fascinating Fact While they don’t build capture webs, *Zelotes* uses silk as a tactical weapon. When tackling dangerous prey like ants, the spider will rapidly circle the victim, "lassoing" its legs to the ground with thick bands of adhesive silk to immobilize it before delivering a precision bite!
