### **Beytell’s Bullfrog (*Pyxicephalus beytelli*)**
The Beytell’s Bullfrog is a titan of the Kalahari sands, a robust and formidable amphibian only recently recognized as a distinct species in 2023. To encounter one is to witness a relic of a more "armored" age of amphibians.
Identification
This is a large, "tank-like" frog, with males reaching roughly 130mm in length. It possesses a massive, broad head and a blunt snout. Its skin is thick and corrugated with longitudinal skin folds (ridges) along the back. The coloration is typically a cryptic olive-green to muddy brown, often mottled with darker spots. To distinguish it from the more common African Bullfrog (*P. adspersus*), look for the **bright yellow to orange "armpits" (axillary patches)** and its slightly smaller overall size. Most notably, its lower jaw features three large, bony projections called **odontodes**—which function like teeth for gripping struggling prey.
Habitat & Range
Beytell’s Bullfrog is a specialist of the **Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area**, spanning northeastern Namibia, northern Botswana, and parts of Angola and Zambia. It thrives in semi-arid savannas with sandy soils, specifically gravitating toward **ephemeral pans** and "omuramba" (dry riverbeds) that fill only during the heavy summer rains.
Behaviour
For most of the year, this frog is a ghost, living deep underground in a state of **aestivation**. It only emerges during "explosive" breeding events triggered by torrential downpours. In the field, you’ll hear the males before you see them; they emit low, resonant "whoops" from the edges of shallow pools. Unlike most frogs, males are fiercely territorial and will physically wrestle rivals to defend their patch of water.
Diet
These are "gape-limited" predators, meaning if it fits in their mouth, it’s on the menu. They are sit-and-wait ambush hunters, lunging at insects, other frogs, lizards, and even small rodents or ground-nesting birds.
Fascinating Fact
To survive the blistering African heat while buried, this frog transforms into a **"living mummy."** It secretes several layers of its own shed skin to create a waterproof, parchment-like cocoon that encases its entire body, leaving only the nostrils exposed to breathe for months at a time!
